E-commerce managers oversee a retail company's online sales and presence. They are responsible for conveying a consistent brand image that attracts customers by encouraging sales on the Web. Managers oversee a team of web designers and software developers who create the online transaction system and look of the website.

Education

E-commerce managers need to have skills in business marketing as well as the technology used for generating online sales. It is common for them to have a bachelor's degree in business marketing, Internet marketing or a closely related major. Coursework in these programs will give a student the basics of graphic design and Web design alongside business management and marketing skills. It is also helpful to have experience in advertising design as many e-commerce sites promote their products on other sites.

Skills

An e-commerce manager often works with the top management of a retail outlet to determine the parameters of a company's online presence. It is important for the manager to have a grasp of Web design software to properly critique and advise the team. Beyond this, e-commerce managers need a strong understanding of Web analytic software that track the success of a site.

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the practice of making changes in the coding and content of a site to get the best ranking on a search engine. Each search engine has a complicated algorithm that decides the order that Web searches appear in. An e-commerce manager must understand these small changes that can be imperceptible to Web consumers yet make large changes in the success of a site.

Job Duties

An e-commerce manager will oversee a team of designers and marketers and is responsible for all online activities. This includes organizing promotions, working with shipping companies to reduce transportation costs and making advertising decisions. Web maintenance and troubleshooting are also ongoing for a website. Keeping your retail site updated for new mobile and computer notebooks is important to potential customers.
